Anyone have a Colt SP1?

Postby CrazyRedneckBastard on Thu Sep 24, 2009 2:15 pm

I decided that I'd rather have a Colt AR then a Wagoneer (means I'm keeping my crappy XJ), so I've kind of settled my eyes on the SP1 model. It's as close as I can get to an VN era E1/A1 I think. Has all the features except the forward assist and (of course) full auto fire.

Just wondering if any one here has experience with them. I don't know anyone that owns one, and I have never had any hands on time with one.

Also, it is possible to drop an A1 upper on to one? I would like to have that forward assist. I think the answer is yes, but figured one of you guys might now for certain.

You are talking about the first generation M16/AR15 correct? If so yes the upper receivers can interchange all the way up to using the flat top version. I have updated a few of the early rifles to A2 status. It is not too difficult. The variable in the civilian models is this does the upper and lower receivers use pins or screws. Ones I have worked on use pins, the ones using screws might have a decidedly different step. When changing barrels the torque values on the barrel nut are minimal 30 pound feet and max 80 pound feet of torque. The compressors depending on the type have different values also. The above may or may not be used on floating barrels, I have not worked with those yet. Your actual mileage may vary depending on what you are attempting to do on your rifle.

I have a friend that shoots one. It's a fine rifle. Although over-priced IMHO. Most everything will interchange with an M-16 or M-4 platform. A new upper will drop right on. Say one in 6.5Grendel or 6.8SPC.

Early AR-15 Colt's can be found for around 12-1500 at shows. They're the closest to the original than anything else.

My Rock River M-4 was a lot less $$$ than his Colt, shoots as well as, and it is more versitile. And with a few parts or an upper I can make it look like an M-16.

I'm really trying to go vintage with this rifle, so I'd like to start with something from the time period.

But, I haven't really been able to set aside any money for it over the last few months. yeah, I have enough to go buy one, but I like heat and food and stuff like that so....

Probably happen this summer when the bills go way down. Though I have been thinking about a nice M14 instead.

And yeah, I'm back, again. Yay.

Well if anyone noticed, I did end up with the Wagoneer over the Colt.

Then saved up enough for a Colt and my tranny died.

I've have a lot of firearms if I didn't own so many Jeeps :fuck:
